WHO raises alarm: HIV treatment shortages may hit Nigeria and others soon

The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed Nigeria among eight countries at risk of depleting their HIV treatment supplies in the coming months.

According to WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus, the disruption stems from the Trump administration’s decision to pause U.S. foreign aid, which has significantly impacted the availability of HIV treatments in affected countries. Others on the list include Haiti, Kenya, Lesotho, South Sudan, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Ukraine.

Ghebreyesus warned that the setback could erase two decades of progress in the fight against HIV, potentially leading to over 10 million new cases and three million HIV-related deaths.

The aid suspension, enforced by President Donald Trump since taking office in January, has also hampered efforts to combat polio, malaria, and tuberculosis.
