Residents of Ogbomoso, Oyo State, were gripped with fear on Friday following a tanker accident involving 45,000 litres of petrol along the Ogbomoso/Ilorin Expressway.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident on Saturday. He said the tanker, bearing registration number MAG 20 XB (Borno), lost control and veered into a roadside pit at the Ayanyan area around 12:30 p.m.
According to Akinwande, the distress call was received via phone from Alfa Kabiru Aderibigbe, prompting an immediate response by firefighters led by PFS11 Oluwaleye. On arrival, the team found the petrol-laden tanker partially overturned and leaking fuel.
Firefighters quickly applied a foam chemical compound to blanket the spillage and prevent any ignition that could have resulted in a fire outbreak.
“Thankfully, no lives were lost, and properties worth millions of naira were saved,” Akinwande stated. He also noted that the swift intervention of the fire service, along with support from police officers and FRSC personnel, ensured security and effective traffic control at the scene.
