The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described social media as a “terrorist organization” and called on Nigerian security agencies to take decisive action against its misuse. This statement was made during the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The Sultan expressed concern over the proliferation of misinformation and harmful content on social media platforms, which he believes pose a significant threat to national unity and security. He emphasized the need for regulatory measures to curb the spread of false information and prevent the incitement of violence through these channels.
This is not the first time the Sultan has addressed the challenges posed by social media. Previously, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under his leadership, has debunked false claims circulated online, including unfounded allegations about the Sultan’s stance on national issues.
The Sultan’s recent remarks have sparked discussions nationwide, with many Nigerians sharing their views on the role of social media in society and the balance between freedom of expression and the need for regulation.
