In response to the severe traffic congestion experienced by commuters, Governor Sanwo Olu visited the Independence Bridge at Bonny Camp this morning to personally assess the ongoing repair work being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works.
Acknowledging the frustration caused by the gridlock, the governor issued a heartfelt apology to Lagosians. “I understand the frustration, delays, and disruption this has caused in your daily lives. As someone who moves through this city, I feel your pain, and we do not take your patience and resilience for granted,” he stated.
The decision to repair the bridge, he explained, was not sudden but part of a long-term plan developed over the past three years to prevent a potential disaster. The structural integrity of the bridge had deteriorated significantly, making urgent intervention necessary to protect lives.
While emphasizing the importance of the repairs, the governor reassured residents that efforts were underway to mitigate the traffic burden. Additional traffic monitoring officials and security personnel have been deployed to improve traffic flow, and relevant agencies are actively exploring solutions to ease congestion.
In a bid to further reduce the strain on commuters, he encouraged businesses and organizations to adopt flexible work arrangements, including remote and hybrid work models. “A temporary shift in work culture can go a long way in reducing traffic pressure and supporting our collective wellbeing,” he said.
The governor urged Lagosians to remain patient and cooperative as the city undertakes these critical infrastructure upgrades. “Together, we can build a more resilient, responsive, and livable Lagos,” he concluded.
The repairs on the Independence Bridge are expected to continue for [duration if available], with authorities promising regular updates on progress and traffic management measures.
