Reps Donate ₦704.91 Million to Tinubu for Vulnerable Nigerians Amid Economic Hardship

Members of the House of Representatives have donated ₦704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu as part of their efforts to cushion the economic hardship triggered by the removal of the petrol subsidy.

The donation fulfills a pledge made by the lawmakers in July 2024 to contribute half of their salaries for six months, with the funds targeted at supporting struggling Nigerians. On July 18, 2024, the legislators resolved to cut their salaries by 50%, committing to raise the sum by December 31, 2024.

The gesture comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with the rising cost of living following the government’s decision to eliminate fuel subsidies. While some have praised the lawmakers for the initiative, others argue that more concrete policy measures are needed to address the economic strain on citizens.

It remains unclear how the donated funds will be disbursed and which categories of vulnerable Nigerians will benefit.
