President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Football Legend Christian Chukwu, Hails Him as a Symbol of Excellence and Patriotism

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigerian football icon Christian Chukwu, who died on Saturday at the age of 74, describing him as a symbol of national pride and a trailblazer in the history of Nigerian sports.

In a heartfelt condolence message, President Tinubu extended sympathies to Chukwu’s family, friends, former teammates, and the entire football community, mourning the loss of a man whose name became synonymous with Nigerian football excellence.

Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman” for his commanding leadership on the field, captained the Green Eagles to their historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980. He later transitioned into coaching, leading the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the 2004 AFCON.

“Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism,” the President said. “He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and stood as a pillar of Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.”

Chukwu also made a lasting impact at the club level with Enugu Rangers, winning numerous national titles and guiding the club to continental glory in 1977 with their African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.

President Tinubu praised Chukwu’s enduring legacy, emphasizing that his influence will live on through the trophies he lifted, the players he mentored, and the memories he gave to countless fans.

“We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love, and we will always remember him with great respect and admiration,” Tinubu said, while praying for strength and comfort for the bereaved family.
