Obasa Re-Elected as Lagos Speaker After Meranda’s Resignation

The political drama at the Lagos State House of Assembly took another twist on Monday as Mudashiru Obasa was re-elected as the Speaker, seven weeks after his controversial removal.

His return to the leadership position follows the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who had stepped in as Speaker after Obasa’s impeachment in January 2025. His nomination was put forward by former Majority Leader Noheem Adams, representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1, and was subsequently approved by the House.

Obasa took the oath of office immediately, reclaiming his position in a chamber where he has served since 2007. He was first elected Speaker in June 2015, holding the seat until his removal on January 13, 2025.
