Lagos Assembly Sets Up Panel to Probe N24 Billion Streetlight Project

The Lagos State House of Assembly has established a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate the N24 billion Light-Up Lagos project, an initiative aimed at improving street lighting across the state.

During a plenary session, Olumoh Saad, representing Ajeromi Ifelodun Constituency 1, raised concerns over poorly lit streets, citing security and public safety risks. He urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to accelerate the award of contracts for the project, as allocated in the 2025 budget, to ensure timely implementation.

Beyond the probe, Saad called on the Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources to ensure that existing streetlights are fully operational. He also pressed local government chairmen to fulfill their responsibilities by maintaining streetlights within their jurisdictions.

Emphasizing the importance of the Light-Up Lagos project, Saad advocated for the adoption of alternative energy sources like solar power, noting its success on the Third Mainland Bridge under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Lagosians are complaining about non-functional streetlights. We need to act fast and explore sustainable energy options,” he stated.

The Assembly’s decision to investigate the project highlights growing concerns over delays and inefficiencies in its execution. As the committee begins its work, residents will be watching closely for improvements in public lighting and security across Lagos.

Stay tuned for further updates as the investigation unfolds.
