Kogi Governor Bans Public Gatherings, Citing Security Risks Amid Natasha’s Homecoming Controversy

Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has imposed a ban on public gatherings and convoy movements across the state, citing security concerns. This decision, announced on March 31, 2025, by Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Femi Fanwo, is reportedly aimed at preventing potential unrest linked to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s planned homecoming celebration.

The government’s statement highlights intelligence reports suggesting that certain individuals intend to stage violent rallies under the guise of political and religious activities, posing a threat to public peace. As a preventive measure, all forms of rallies and public gatherings are prohibited until further notice. Additionally, any individual or group entering Kogi State with a convoy of security personnel must obtain prior clearance from the relevant state commands to ensure proper verification of accompanying security operatives.
These actions have sparked criticism, with many viewing them as attempts to suppress opposition and hinder Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters from celebrating her return. Despite the restrictions, her supporters have expressed determination to find alternative ways to mark the occasion.
The government maintains that these measures are temporary and necessary to maintain peace and security in the state. Residents are encouraged to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
