IGP Warns Against Human Rights Violations, Police Misconduct in High-Level Virtual Meeting

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed his commitment to professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) during a virtual meeting with senior strategic police managers on February 10, 2025.

In a decisive address, the IGP issued a stern warning against human rights violations, stressing that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face severe consequences. He acknowledged the increasing number of complaints received through the Force’s complaint channels and reiterated that the NPF must uphold the rights of citizens at all times.

Key Directives from the IGP:

– Zero Tolerance for Human Rights Violations: Officers must respect fundamental rights, and any breach will attract strict disciplinary actions.

– Tactical Squads Must Maintain Professionalism: Operatives are prohibited from carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian clothing (mufti). All squads must adhere to standard operating procedures and wear approved uniforms.

– Strict Case Management Rules: The indiscriminate transfer of cases without written approval from the IGP is banned, as it causes delays in justice and unnecessary burdens on affected parties.

– Collaboration for Institutional Integrity: Officers across all ranks must work together to uphold the reputation of the Force by preventing misconduct and abuse of power.

The IGP’s directives reflect an ongoing effort to restore public trust in the Nigeria Police Force while ensuring that officers perform their duties ethically and professionally.

“The image of the Force is built on trust, discipline, and professionalism,” the IGP stated. “Any officer who violates these principles will face the full weight of the law.”

The Force Headquarters has assured the public that these measures will be strictly enforced, with a renewed focus on accountability and justice.
