Court Grants Ex-Taraba Governor Permission for Medical Trip Amidst Corruption Trial

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has approved a request by former Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, to travel abroad for medical treatment, despite his ongoing corruption trial.

Justice Sylvanus Oriji granted the request on Wednesday following a motion filed by Ishaku’s legal counsel, Paul Ogbole SAN. The former governor is set to travel to Arjam, United Arab Emirates (UAE), for a routine medical check-up.

Ishaku is currently facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside Bello Yero, a former permanent secretary in the Taraba State Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The duo is battling a 15-count charge involving conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and the alleged misappropriation of public funds totaling N27 billion.

While granting the request, the court did not specify any conditions for his return, but legal analysts suggest that his travel could influence the course of the high-profile case. The EFCC has yet to comment on whether it will challenge the ruling.

As the case unfolds, the public remains keen on the outcome of the trial, which could have significant implications for the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
