Wife of Nigeria president Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday, launched its inaugural edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) expected to be implemented across all the states of the federation, with N950m disbursed in the process.
The initiative, which targets at least 250 beneficiaries from each state is themed: ‘Better Days Ahead’.
According to the president’s wife, the initiative is an economic empowerment programme borne out of a steadfast commitment to the well-being of elderly citizens and marking a significant stride in the collective pursuit of a more inclusive and compassionate society.
Speaking at the programme in Lagos State, Tinubu’s wife represented by Lagos State first lady, Mrs Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu said the scheme is to support 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
According to her, the selected beneficiaries will receive N100,000 each to cushion the effect of the economic situation and to alleviate the burdens of esteemed elders during this festive period.
“Each state of the federation will receive the sum N25m. We are committed to ensuring that each state receives this gesture, without discrimination.
“As we approach the festive season, it becomes very important to emphasize the significance of prioritizing our elderly citizens in our initiatives. “By reaching out to the elderly this festive period, we not only honour their contributions but also acknowledge the unique encounters they face.”
She therefore urged the senior citizens to embrace life to the fullest, prioritize their health, nurture their minds and strengthen bonds with their loved ones and with God.
She appreciated all excellencies, state coordinators of RHI, and partners who have supported with free medical screening and the distribution of other sundry items to the beneficiaries in ensuring the success of the programme.
She sought for continued support and prayers for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
