Adeyanju Hails AIG Gumel’s Courage Amid Rivers Crisis, Slams IGP Egbetokun’s Retaliatory Transfer

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has applauded Assistant Inspector General of Police, Usaini Gumel, for his bold and principled opposition to the controversial and allegedly illegal attempt to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. In a strongly worded statement issued to journalists, Adeyanju commended Gumel’s rare display of integrity and bravery, particularly in a climate where such values are often suppressed within security institutions.

According to Adeyanju, Gumel’s refusal to support the unconstitutional move, despite holding a sensitive and high-ranking position within the force, reflects the kind of courage Nigeria desperately needs in its public servants. “If more individuals like AIG Gumel rise to speak out against the erosion of our democratic principles, there remains hope for a brighter future for Nigeria,” Adeyanju said.

The activist, however, expressed deep concern over the swift transfer of AIG Gumel by Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to the Community Policing, Research, and Planning department—a move widely perceived as punitive. The transfer reportedly followed Gumel’s private remarks expressing disapproval of the attempt to declare a state of emergency and suspend Governor Sim Fubara.

Adeyanju described the reassignment as a retaliation for speaking the truth, stressing that the comments in question were made informally among colleagues and only leaked due to a breach of trust. “This transfer raises serious questions about the integrity of the police leadership and the kind of message it sends to officers who dare to speak truth to power,” he stated.

He called on Nigerians—especially those in positions of authority—to rally around individuals like Gumel, who stand firm on the side of justice. “We must collectively condemn acts of lawlessness, no matter where they come from, and protect those who uphold the constitution at great personal cost,” Adeyanju urged.

The incident has reignited debate about internal democracy within Nigeria’s security agencies, the politicization of law enforcement, and the urgent need for reform. As Rivers State’s political crisis continues to unfold, Adeyanju’s call for solidarity and accountability may resonate with a growing number of Nigerians demanding transparency and the rule of law.
