Panic and heartbreak struck the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos this morning as a building housing a popular local restaurant on Oremeta Street collapsed, trapping an unknown number of people under the rubble.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m., just as the morning rush was beginning. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crack before the structure gave way, sending people in and around the building scrambling for safety.
Emergency responders and local volunteers are currently on-site, working tirelessly to clear debris and rescue potential survivors. So far, the number of casualties remains unconfirmed, but many are feared dead or critically injured.
“This is a devastating scene,” said one rescue worker. “We’re doing everything we can to find anyone who might still be alive underneath.”
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse, but preliminary reports suggest the building may have been structurally compromised for some time.
Families and loved ones have gathered near the scene, anxiously awaiting news. The area has been cordoned off as rescue efforts continue.
This is a developing story. More details to follow.
