A shocking incident of police extortion has come to light, highlighting the growing concern of harassment and intimidation faced by travelers on the East West Road, particularly those entering Bayelsa from Delta towards Mbiama. On September 17, 2024, a group of NYSC members traveling to Rivers State were forced to part with a staggering N10,000,000 after being threatened, detained, and subjected to emotional distress by police officers from Zone 16, Bayelsa State.
The officers involved used an account belonging to NKEM ALOZIE of MALVIC GLOBAL RESOURCES LIMITED for their illicit activities, with no complaint filed against the victims, no incriminating evidence found, and nobody signing their bail bond. This blatant abuse of power is a stark reminder that this is not policing as it should be.
Fortunately, following a report filed on October 25, 2024, with the Inspector General of Police Complaint Response Unit, the extorted funds were successfully retrieved on November 5, 2024. The victims have provided statements to the police, and the officers are currently attached to the Surveillance Unit AIG Zone 16, Bayelsa State.
However, concerns linger that if no action is taken, these officers will continue to exploit innocent victims, perpetuating a culture of fear and corruption. It is imperative that authorities take swift and decisive action to address this issue, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and that the rights of citizens are protected.
